Frequently asked questions
E-invoicing is new territory for most small businesses. Here's what you need to know about the French mandate and how this app handles it for you.
The basics
What is all this about? Give me the short version.+
France is digitising its invoicing system. From September 2026, every business with a SIREN must be registered on a government-certified platform to receive electronic invoices, and large companies must also start issuing through one from that same date. SMEs and micro-enterprises follow in September 2027. This app is your invoicing tool for that world: create invoices, send them compliantly, receive them from suppliers, track payments. The compliance side happens automatically underneath.
What is e-invoicing and why is France making it mandatory?+
From September 2026, invoices between French businesses can no longer be sent as PDFs by email alone. They have to go through a government-approved platform, which formats the invoice, delivers it to your client, and reports the transaction to the tax authority automatically, in real time.
The reason France is doing this is straightforward: Italy introduced the same system in 2019 and recovered billions in additional tax revenue almost immediately. Not by catching fraudsters, but because underreporting becomes very difficult when every transaction is automatically visible to the government. France is following the same model, as part of a wider EU push to modernise VAT collection.
What it means in practice depends on your company size. From September 2026, every business with a SIREN must be registered on a certified platform to receive invoices. Large companies must also start issuing through one from that date. SMEs and micro-enterprises follow in September 2027.
If you're a micro, the immediate priority is getting registered so you can receive.
I currently email PDF invoices to my clients. Will I have to stop?+
It depends on who you're invoicing.
If your client is another business (B2B), the PDF gets replaced by a structured invoice submitted through a certified platform such as this. The invoice is made out to your client's SIREN number, which is how the system identifies them and sends the invoice to their platform automatically. This app handles all of that. You still get a PDF if you want one to send alongside, but the platform submission is what counts as compliant. The deadline depends on your company size, so check the previous question for the phased dates.
If your client is an individual customer (B2C), PDFs are still fine. Individual customers don't have a SIREN number, so they sit outside the e-invoicing mandate entirely. There is a separate obligation called e-reporting that applies to B2C sales, but that's about periodically reporting your transaction totals to the government, not changing how you send invoices to your customers.
What is e-reporting and does it affect me?+
E-reporting is a separate obligation for transactions outside the e-invoicing mandate: B2C sales (to individual customers) and cross-border B2B transactions. Instead of routing individual invoices through a platform, you periodically report aggregate totals to the government. If you sell to individuals (restaurants, shops, tradespeople with private clients), e-reporting applies to you. It follows the same phased rollout as e-invoicing: large companies and ETI from September 2026, SMEs and micro-enterprises from September 2027.
Does this affect me if I'm in franchise en base de TVA (TVA-exempt)?+
Yes. The mandate applies to all businesses with a SIREN regardless of TVA status. Being franchise en base de TVA means you don't charge TVA, but you're still required to be registered on a platform to receive invoices from September 2026 and to issue them from September 2027.
What happens if I don't register?+
From September 2026, businesses that aren't registered on a certified platform won't be able to receive compliant e-invoices from other businesses. From September 2027, B2B invoices issued outside a certified platform will be non-compliant. Penalties are €15 per invoice, up to €15,000 per year.
What this app does
What is Super PDP and what does it have to do with this app?+
Super PDP is one of the government-certified platforms authorised to handle e-invoicing in France. There are around 80 of these certified platforms — their job is to receive invoices, convert them into the correct format, route them across the Peppol network to the recipient's platform, and report the transaction to the tax authority. Businesses can't do this directly: it has to go through one of these certified platforms.
This app is built on top of Super PDP. When you create an invoice here, Super PDP handles the compliance and routing underneath. You get a straightforward interface in English, without needing to deal with Super PDP directly yourself.
What does this app actually do for me?+
This app is an English language platform which connects your business to Super PDP, one of the government-certified invoicing platforms. When you create an invoice here, the app formats it correctly (Factur-X), routes it through the Peppol network, and delivers it to your client's platform. You get a PDF copy, can send it to your client by email, and see a full status history: submitted, acknowledged, paid, cancelled. Signing up here gives you 100% compliance
What about invoices I receive from other businesses?+
This is the September 2026 requirement: every business with a SIREN must be able to receive e-invoices from that date. Registering on this app gets you compliant. Once your company is activated, incoming invoices appear automatically in the Factures Received tab. Any supplier registered on any certified platform (not just Super PDP) can route invoices to you through the Peppol network.
Can I still get a PDF of my invoice?+
Yes. Every invoice generates a branded PDF you can download or send directly from the app. The PDF includes your logo and colours if you've uploaded them in company settings.
I use SumUp for my sales. Does this app work with that?+
SumUp is not handling e-reporting for its users. They're pointing people toward third-party solutions to manage that obligation separately.
We're building a SumUp integration that will let you connect your SumUp account directly to this app. Once connected, your SumUp transactions will import automatically, grouped with their VAT totals, ready to submit as your e-reporting. The goal is to have B2B invoicing and B2C e-reporting in one place, so you're not juggling multiple platforms.
The integration is on the roadmap. If you're a SumUp user and want to know when it's ready, get in touch.
What is the Receiving plan for?+
The Receiving plan (€3/month) covers the September 2026 requirement: being registered on a platform so you can receive e-invoices. It doesn't let you issue invoices. It's the minimum to be compliant before the first deadline. You can upgrade to Starter or Pro when you're ready to issue invoices too.
Glossary
Key terms you'll encounter when dealing with French e-invoicing.
A transaction between two registered businesses (both have a SIREN). B2B invoices are subject to the e-invoicing mandate: they must be routed through a certified platform from September 2027. This app handles B2B invoicing.
A transaction from a business to an individual customer (no SIREN). B2C invoices are not subject to the e-invoicing mandate, so you can continue emailing PDFs. A separate e-reporting obligation applies for aggregate B2C totals.
A government-certified platform for routing e-invoices in France. All businesses must be registered on one from September 2026. Super PDP is the one this app uses.
The government's central directory and fiscal data hub for e-invoicing in France, managed by the DGFiP. The PPF does not send or receive invoices: that role belongs exclusively to PDPs. It serves two functions: the routing directory (mapping each SIREN to its registered PDP) and the data concentrator (collecting invoice data from PDPs for DGFiP's tax oversight). When you register on a PDP, the PDP registers you in the PPF directory automatically.
The Franco-German structured invoice format required by the mandate. It's a PDF with embedded XML data. This app generates Factur-X automatically. You never need to think about it.
The European network used to route e-invoices between platforms. Think of it like email, but for structured invoices. Every business registered on a PDP gets a Peppol address.
Your 9-digit business registration number, issued by INSEE. Used to identify you as seller and to look up buyers when creating invoices.
Your 14-digit establishment identifier: SIREN plus a 5-digit NIC suffix. Useful for multi-site businesses. For most invoicing purposes, SIREN is what matters.
A separate obligation covering B2C and international transactions: you report aggregate totals to the government rather than routing individual invoices. This app focuses on e-invoicing (B2B) for now.
TVA-exempt status for businesses under the revenue threshold. You don't charge TVA, but you're still in scope for the e-invoicing mandate.
A status event you send when a client has paid. "fr:212" is the official Peppol status code for payment confirmation. This app sends it automatically when you mark an invoice as paid.
